I’ve been a round peg in a square hole for as long as I can remember, being fascinated by the broad sweep of society and global change, as well as by the minutiae of how species, communities and ecosystems respond to multiple threats.  I’m an American-born ecologist and sustainability strategist working as Lead Scientist: Climate Change BioAdaptation and Head: Biodiversity Futures at the South African National Biodiversity Institute, and I’m also research associate of the African Climate and Development Initiative and the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence at the Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology (both at the University of Cape Town), as well as the Institute for Futures Research (at the University of Stellenbosch’s Business School).  I’ve worked across academia, government, global initiatives and organizations, and publicly funded research organizations.
