Striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum) leaves and seeds from the southern Appalachians of the United States depict two of three plant functional traits, leaf nitrogen content and seed mass, examined by Coyle et al. (this issue) in their assessment of the stress-dominance hypothesis in eastern North American forests.
