A blue-banded toucanet (Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctis) foraging in a montane cloud forest in southeastern Peru. Aulacorhynchus toucanets defend year-round territories, and three species live along the elevational gradient with minimal elevational overlap (one high, one middle, and one
low). Our results show that strong territorial defense is commonly associated with this elevational distribution pattern, suggesting that behavior influences elevational range limits in tropical birds. Photo by Joe Tobias. Full paper here
