Tropical frugivore bird communities mainly consist of obligate frugivourous species, which form fairly generalized interaction networks with their fruit plants, i.e. the birds often share fruit recourses, as exemplified with the South American Tangara chilensis and Chiroxiphia boliviana both eating berries from a Miconia sp. On the other hand, high latitude communities consist mainly of bird species with an omnivorous diet containing both fruits and a wide range of other food types, but form specialized networks of interactions with their fruit plants. This illustrates our findings that there is an opposed latitudinal pattern of network-derived and assemblage-level dietary specialization. Painting by Jon Fjeldså. Full paper here
