Appearing very snake-like, the Greater pipefish (Syngnathus acus) nestles among the leaves of common eelgrass (Zostera marina) in a shallow coastal bay in the Gullmar Fjord, western Sweden. Abundances of these and other fish that utilise and reside in seagrass meadows in this region could be influenced by changes in spatial habitat patterning in the marine landscape. Indeed, our study showed that seascape structure and complexity significantly affected fish densities in these important shallow-water habitats. Photo by Thomas Staveley.
