Bison (Bison bonasus) in a rewilding site in De Maashorst, the Netherlands. Extensive efforts have ensured that bison were brought back from the brink of extinction last century and are now often reintroduced as keystone species into rewilding sites. Our study looks across seven rewilding sites in Europe to see whether and how they have changed over time, and provides a methodology for measuring rewilding progress across contexts and scales.
